At the start of the film, Dwayne Johnson's character Davis Okoye is introduced; a primatologist who has a special bond with animals, even more so than with people. This bond is specifically seen through his relationship with an albino gorilla named George, who can communicate through sign language.
You can see that Okoye is better with animals than with people through the dynamic between him and his coworkers. These characters include Amy (Breanne Hill), Connor (Jack Quade), and Nelson (P.J. Byre).
After the first few scenes, these characters don't seem to show up again, without knowledge of where they go. Their character arcs are quite disappointing, as they are introduced in a way that gives them importance, only to end shortly after.
Early on, a spaceship explosion sends space pods to earth. Three animals George, a wolf, and a lizard, are genetically modified when they come in contact with pods.
The pods cause massive growth and violent behavior of the animals affected. George puts Okoye in a difficult position throughout the film as he has to decide if people or animals are more important.
His sidekick, Dr. Kate (Naomi Harris), works with Okoye to save Chicago from these animals, who are being sought out by the company that created them. They are aided by Burke (Joe Manganiello), the leader of a private military crew.
The big bad, Claire Wyden (Malin Akerman) and her brother, Brett (Jake Lacy), work for the company that accidentally created the animals. The entire film they seek to cover up their tracks and make a profit off of their experiment.
The main actors did a pretty good job overall. The best out of all of them would have to be Akerman because she played a great villain. She has often played the pretty blonde girl in chick flicks, so I was pleasantly surprised to see her be evil.
I would give this film three stars. It was well made and had great acting, but the storyline was very unoriginal.
