'Sweet Magnolias' is centered around a scandal that happens right before the show takes place. Maddie, one of the three main characters, is working through the fact that her husband had an affair with a younger woman.
They live in the small southern town of Serenity. The townspeople are not at all forgiving and seem to be involved in each other's business. This is why the affair and all surrounding it constantly get thrown into Maddie and her children's faces.
You also get to know Maddie's two best friends, Helen and Dana Sue. These three women have been friends since they were children.
My favorite part about the show isn't the friendship of these three women but the friendship of Maddie's two sons and Dana Sue's daughter. This love triangle is gold! In fact, it is because of them that I kept watching the show.
I was often confused by how dramatic Dana Sue was about nothing. She's a successful chef and businesswoman, which is why I don't understand why she acts that way. Next season, I would love to see her continue to grow as a person and to see a revelation as to why she is the way she is.
What makes this show good is the realness of the divorce that happens due to the affair. Tyler, Kyle, and Katie all have different responses to their father's affair which makes the story more realistic.
The TV-14 rating makes sense because it's not inherently inappropriate, but it's not necessarily a Christian show. Though the characters speak about Jesus, they aren't necessarily following the values of the Bible.
