The Sad Tale of Anne with an E!

Updated: Sep 6, 2020

Not only is this show historically inaccurate but inaccurate in comparison to the books.

First of all, women never spent time alone with men, so spin the bottle would not have happened. Spin the bottle was not invented until a couple of years ago. Men and women weren't allowed to kiss whoever they wanted.

In addition to this, the new character Cole who puts on a dress and hangs out with women is historically inaccurate. Men did not hang out with women alone or wear dresses.

Second, Aunt Josephine never married or fell in love because she had money and didn't need to. To say she was secretly gay and that's why people thought she was single, takes away from what a strong woman she was. She didn't need a relationship to thrive. To add modern problems in the Victorian Era doesn't work. Did the producers not research history or what?

Gilbert's father didn't die, he didn't move in with a man named Sebastian. He grew up with a happy childhood and didn't realize he wanted to become a doctor until later. He started as a teacher... Please tell me why he was sent off to work on a ship, please.

Anne was never an inappropriate girl. She never had modern beliefs, she was a proper girl. For instance, her belief that she doesn't want to marry but have a love mate... Yes, that is accepted now, but it was most definitely not accepted back then. The only time women lived with a man was when they were married.

I thought adding scenes where Marilla (Geraldine James) and Nate (Taras Lavren) see each other washing themselves was pretty weird and improper. Marilla was a very conservative woman, she was always appropriate and strong-willed in her Christian beliefs.

To change the entire theme of the books by adding problems having to do with sexual orientation, feminism, and many other modern issues doesn't make sense. If they wanted to create a show with modern ideas they needed to create a whole new story. Don't take a book from the Victorian Era and add historically inaccurate things.
