'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' (2018) was just released on Netflix. This film made me feel as if I was a part of the story, living and knowing the characters. It was refreshing, romantic, beautiful, and truthful in an utmost way.
The basic premise of the film is about author Juliet Ashton (Lily James) who receives a letter from Dawsey Adams (Michiel Muisman) asking for a copy of a book for his book society. His society was started because of the Germans occupying Guernsey during World War II. Even though the war has ended, there is a lack of books in the town of Guernsey. The story entices the author to the point that leads her to leave London to visit his society.
This film takes Juliet on a journey of finding herself, friends, romance, and a story worth telling. She not only comes to understand the people in Guernsey but finds herself becoming one of them.
The rest of the film takes a glance at what happened to the people of Guernsey during the war intertwined between the story of Juliet growing to love this society. Each character in the society is kind, down to earth, and truly poetic. There love and passion for literature is refreshing.
For me, this film fits along with other British films that I love including Jane Austen's 'Emma,' 'Pride and Prejudice,' 'Sense and Sensibility,' Louisa May Alcott's 'Little Women' and L.M. Montgomery's 'Anne of Green Gables' series. I was not disappointed in the cast, storyline, or the cinematography. I typically don't like history, except for royal history, but I loved this entertaining story about WWII. My favorite part of the film was, Dawsey Adams.
Dawsey was such a refreshing male character, especially as so many men in films today are not gentlemen. He was such a gentleman, and a kind-hearted man, who cared for those around him. The connection between him and Juliet as friends was heartwarming and tear-jerking. He was better than my favorite on-screen men including Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Nightly. Do men like him exist in real life or is that just for show... But honestly, this story was the best.
This film warmed my heart and made me feel as if I wanted to jump on a plane and find myself in Guernsey. If you haven't been lucky enough to watch this film, please drop whatever you're doing to do so.
