Not only is Hotel Del Coronado beautiful but so is the island surrounding it. Coronado Island is actually a Naval Base that's open to the public. Beaches, bungalows, and mom and pop shops are just a few things this island has to offer.
It has always been a dream of mine to visit this famous hotel because it's featured in one of my favorite films, Some Like it Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959). If you haven't seen this classic film, it's about two men (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) who accidentally see a mafia shooting. To hide from the mafia they dress up and join a women's band.
WHAT DOES THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO HAVE TO DO WITH THE FILM?
Almost the entire film, the band stays and performs at the hotel. While only the exteriors were filmed there (in 1958), the inside looks very similar to that in the film. In fact, until I read the hotel's website, I thought the interior shots were filmed there.
The most famous scene when Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon's characters are hanging out on the beach was shot at the private beach behind the hotel. This is the first time Marilyn Monroe sees Tony Curtis looking more like himself... a man.
My friend and I took a stroll to the back of the hotel to see this famous beach. It was a sight to see. If I was staying at the hotel, I would love to swim in the giant pool with a beautiful view of the ocean.
We sat on a bench admiring the ocean and the sand between our toes. We made our way over to some lounge chairs but were quickly told they were only for guests or paying customers.
Overall, I recommend visiting. Go on a day when it's sunny, and bring your bathing suit and a towel. This is a very relaxing, beautiful island, so if you can spend the day here do it!
